Position Overview The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment in support of civil, construction, aggregate / pit, and related operational activities. This role performs earthworks, utility work, roadbuilding, material handling, stockpiling, crusher feed support, loading, hauling support, and related tasks while maintaining awareness of site conditions, workers, utilities, traffic patterns, and project or production requirements. Heavy Equipment Operators are expected to operate skillfully, follow direction, complete inspections, protect company assets, and contribute to safe, productive, and efficient field and aggregate operations. Key Roles and Responsibilities Equipment Operation • Operate assigned equipment safely, efficiently, and within competency and authorization limits. • Perform excavation, grading, loading, lifting, compaction, trenching, material movement, stockpiling, crusher feed support, and related tasks as directed. • Follow grade, line, utility, layout, haul route, stockpile, and work area instructions carefully. • Adjust work methods to suit changing site, pit, weather, and material conditions while maintaining safety and quality. Equipment Inspection and Care • Conduct daily pre-use inspections and report defects immediately. • Maintain assigned equipment in clean, serviceable condition. • Assist with fueling, greasing, and basic servicing checks where required. • Stop operation of equipment that is unsafe or not functioning correctly. Coordination and Site Awareness • Work closely with foremen, labourers, truck drivers, grade checkers, crusher operators, and other operators. • Maintain awareness of overhead hazards, underground utilities, trench conditions, slopes, haul roads, stockpiles, plant areas, and nearby workers. • Follow spotter direction, radio protocols, exclusion zones, traffic patterns, and safe access procedures. • Support productive coordination with the crew and overall site or pit plan. Safety and Quality • Follow company safety procedures, equipment rules, and task requirements. • Report hazards, utility concerns, unstable ground, site or pit issues, and incidents immediately. • Perform work to required tolerances and operational expectations. • Protect completed work, adjacent structures, stockpiles, plant areas, and company equipment. Working Conditions • Field-based role in active project, pit, quarry, and / or aggregate production environments and varying weather conditions. • Exposure to vibration, noise, dust, heavy equipment traffic, slopes, excavation, stockpiles, plant areas, and changing ground conditions. • PPE required. Career Path This role may progress to senior operator, foreman, aggregate leadership, mine supervision, specialty operator roles, or broader field leadership positions based on performance and company needs.
