Shannon Baikie, Executive Director, MA, CCDP
Hello North Vancouver Island and beyond! My name is Shannon Baikie and I am the Executive Director here at North Island Employment Foundations Society otherwise known and NIEFS. After 15 years working in the technology start-up space in senior VP Human Resource positions in Victoria, I moved back to my hometown of Campbell River in 2008 to be with my husband and raise my newborn son.
I had no idea what I was going to do career wise given there were very limited opportunities in senior human resource positions so I began to consider my options after parental leave. Fortunately, I saw a posting for a Career Advisor with NIEFS and in my heart felt it was a right fit so I applied and got the job.
Fast forward 16 years, with a Master’s in Community Economic Development and a Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP), I’ve pretty well done it all at NIEFS and now have the absolute privilege to lead an amazing team of professionals every day! The Career Development sector is growing quickly and is recognized nationally through rigorous certification demonstrating the skill and competence of those in the field. If you haven’t connected with a Career Development professional you are missing out. No matter what age or stage you are at in your career we can help in your journey!

Graeme Chan, Youth Employment Specialist/Group Facilitator
Hi, my name is Graeme! I am a Youth Employment Specialist and Co-Facilitator of the Careers in Caring Program at NIEFS. I grew up in Yellowknife, and now as a newer resident of the Island, sometimes find myself reminiscing about the good old days of -40C and walking on a frozen lake with frosty eyelashes!
I started my interest in Career Development when I was a client of WorkBC in Squamish. It was during that time I realized how impactful this work is, and I thought, ‘This is a cool job’, to be able to support people in the same way I was helped. My previous roles as a Red Seal Cabinetmaker and a Cargo Manager have offered some awesome opportunities to develop a diverse set of skills and the NIEFS Team have given me a great opportunity to continue growing them even more.
I really enjoy supporting people in finding their footing and collaborating with them to identify the solutions and opportunities they are seeking. Whether it's offering guidance or just lending an ear, I strive to create a laid-back and approachable space for growth and self-discovery, and believe that if I’m laughing, I’m learning.
Outside of work, I’m a music lover, and have played the bass in bands most of my life. I am also a huge fan of donuts (because who isn't?), always on the lookout for the best spot in town. Apple Fritters are my fave!
When I’m not indulging my sweet tooth, you might find me hitting the courts for a game of squash, staying active, or with my nose buried in a book. With a balance of connecting with people, music, donuts, and squash, I believe one can truly live a happy life.

Charity Gillett, CCDP, Community Engagement Coordinator
I’ve been fortunate to live on the unceded territory of the Kwakiutl people for the past 10 years. Originally from the prairies, I spent many years up in Northern BC before making my way here and I love living on the north island! The beauty, space and adventure is such a gift, whether I’m in the woods with my dog or paddling on the water.
One of my passions is connecting people with the resources or people that can help them reach their goals. I joined the NIEFS team in 2017, and after seven years as an Employment Counsellor, I moved to a new role as Community Engagement Coordinator based out of Port Hardy. I get to wear many hats in this role, and you may see me out in community connecting with employers and job seekers, supporting our brand new Foundry Work & Education program for youth, and online where I facilitate workshops and information sessions. I also work with people who need specialized disability services in the north island, and have so much gratitude for the incredible work I get to do and the community I’m a part of.
I spend much of my time outside of work with my family, tending my garden and home. I have a deep love of learning, and like to say that no learning is ever wasted, even if our plans change along the way. Right now, I’m learning more about local food security and how to grow and forage more food in my own community, and I enjoy doing literacy work outside of my work role.
Chris Callanan, Regional Manager, Employer Services
I’m Chris Callanan, the Regional Manager of Employer Services here at North Island Employment Foundations Society (NIEFS), and I am approaching my 10 year mark with NIEFS. My work background is quite diverse with the bulk of it being in spent in Senior Leadership and Human Resources Roles.
I came into this organization not knowing anything about employment services. After an informational interview (which I didn’t even know was called that at the time) I jumped in with both feet and quickly immersed myself into this sector doing a variety of roles. I worked in the Resource Centre, and as an Employment Counsellor, Wage Subsidy Coordinator, Employer Services Team Leader until I joined the Senior Leadership Team as a Regional Manager.
Over this time, I have had so many great experiences with NIEFS from attending countless community events as a Host or Exhibitor to attending and presenting at Provincial and National conferences to even publishing a magazine article that was shared across Canada.
I am super fortunate to have the role I have, as I get to support Employers of every sector across the North Island Region with a variety of supports and services that can allow them to attract, retain and develop their staff members. My role is very dynamic, and often has me out and about directly engaging with Employers.
When I first started at NIEFS I had no idea of the variety of roles available and where they could even lead me to. But I am so glad I took this leap 10 years ago and I am really looking forward to the years ahead.

Connie Guenther, Client Services Coordinator, Campbell River
Since joining NIEFS in 2018 my role has included supporting, mentoring and training our team, as well as working with and supporting clients in rural and remote areas of Northern Vancouver Island. I currently facilitate employment/training focused workshops both in-house and in community; and I come to work every day with the hope that I can make a difference in the lives of others.
My career in Employment Counselling had its roots in my home town of Port aux Basques Newfoundland when I was working with HRDC. The Fishery had just closed, devastating our province and sending thousands of Islanders to seek out new careers and new lives further away. Watching the lives of people change overnight was one of the founding reasons I wanted to work as a Career Counsellor. I just wanted to help. I have lived, worked and grown through adversity and change and understand the needs of people struggling to find hope and sustainable employment again.
Throughout the years I have worked in health care, communications and administration and have also volunteered with youth programs such as the Air Cadets. The work experience, training and people I have met along the way have forged the foundation of the person I am today. I will be forever be grateful to those that have mentored me along the way. Always at the core of everything I do, and strive to do better is to help make the lives of others better. The success of my clients is what I hope for every day.
As a Military Spouse I have had the privilege to live all over this beautiful country of ours. This is the second time I have made Vancouver Island and NIEFS my home. Campbell River is truly a beautiful community and I am blessed to be a part of such a talented and amazing team. Living on this island is very much like living back home in Newfoundland. Most important of all however is being able to be near my two sons and two beautiful grandchildren. I look forward to continuing the work I do and hope to have more and more success stories to share along the way.

Frances McBride, BA (Hons.) Specialized Employment Counsellor
My name is Frances, and I’m a Specialized Employment Counsellor with NIEFS. My focus is supporting our clients who want to work on developing and strengthening foundational skills and prioritizing mental health before focusing on job search, or during the job sustainment phase of their time with NIEFS. I am passionate about working with my clients from a strengths-based perspective, building upon already existing foundations to build confidence, regulate challenging emotions, and contextualize the impact that trauma can have on our lives.
Having grown up in Victoria, my journey to working with this amazing team of people at NIEFS started with taking a Women’s and Gender Studies class while living in Toronto. I became passionate about feminism, and began my career in counselling and advocacy for people who have experienced intimate partner violence. I have been fortunate enough to work in this field in both Victoria and the west coast of Vancouver Island in Ucluelet and the surrounding area. These days, working remotely from Newfoundland as an employee of NIEFS has given me the chance to develop something meaningful for a population I care deeply about.
I feel lucky to be on the path I’m on, having had the privilege to make career choices based on my values and what I needed in significant life moments. I want to support my clients in growing opportunities for themselves that reflect the lives they envision. I truly believe that the team at NIEFS is committed to working with the community to do just that.
If we know each other, you know that I am obsessed with pizza, and that Nirvana is my all time favourite band. I even got to talk about them on a podcast once! I’m happiest when I’m hanging out with my son, my husband, and our two cats, spending quality time with family and friends, going for walks and swimming in lakes (and the ocean if it’s warm enough!). If I’ve got some time to myself, you’ll find me on the couch watching The Office for the millionth time, chomping on a bag of croutons!
Jacquelyn Block - Specialized Employment Counsellor, CCDP Candidate
Thank you for reading, I look forward to working with you.
Here’s a little about me;
I was born and raised in Campbell River. Though I’ve relocated to various communities on the island a few times, I always return home. I love Dogs!!! I also really enjoy baking, any form of creativity, singing, spending time outdoors, and learning. If there is something I can do to improve, I’m there!
My helping nature has been apparent since childhood; caring for others at school, advocating for inclusion, babysitting, volunteering and getting as involved in community as I possibly could.
Professionally, my supportive roles started in 2008 when I first became a Community Support Worker. I have never left helping professions. Since, I have had the privilege of helping others shine as a Vocal Coach, Health Care Assistant, Program Coordinator, Education Assistant, and Kinship provider. Other industries I’ve dabbled in include food services, performing arts, and even a little fishing and shellfish harvesting with family.
My intentions are to continue building strong connections and professional development here in Campbell River with NIEFS. I love my role here, thanks to the uniqueness of each individual I get to work with, a beautiful community, and never-ending opportunities to learn and grow.

Charlene Kadzunge, Youth Employment Specialist/Group Facilitator
My career journey has been just as diverse. I started in human resources in Zimbabwe, transitioned into youth support services and healthcare in Canada and the UK, and even spent four years in China teaching while earning my Master’s in International Finance. Each experience has shaped me and led me to where I am today—working as a Youth Employment Specialist at NIEFS. I couldn’t be happier to be part of such an amazing team. The warm and welcoming environment at NIEFS made it easy to feel right at home, and it’s truly inspiring to work alongside people who are passionate about making a difference in our community.
Through the Careers in Caring program, I have the privilege of helping young people explore opportunities in the caring field and take meaningful steps toward their future careers. My role at NIEFS aligns perfectly with my values of growth, connection, and making a real impact. I am passionate about empowering youth, and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing them grow in confidence, achieve their goals, and realize their potential. Being part of their journey is an honor, and knowing that I can contribute to their success keeps me motivated every day.
Outside of work, I’m always looking for ways to bring joy and positivity into my life. Whether I’m soaking up the summer sun at the beach, discovering new hobbies, or sharing stories and laughter with friends, I believe life is all about balance and embracing the little things that bring happiness. I find great relaxation in unwinding with a long, hot bath while enjoying music after a busy day at work. In the future, I’d love to explore learning how to paint and express myself through art. I also love immersing myself in different cultures and trying new experiences—because you never know what exciting opportunity might be just around the corner!

Gay Bruner, Career Development Practitioner, Essential Skills Practitioner, Certified Job Developer & Job Club Facilitator
I am an island girl through and through, born and raised, third generation Vancouver Islander.
Sport and movement dominated my younger self, figure skating, softball and skiing. Now more of a spectator but still getting a lot of joy from watching and remembering.
My creative outlet takes the form of photography and writing.
I love reading and watching good mysteries.
I enjoy time with friends and family, eating good food and drinking good wine. Summer time is the best for picnics, water sports, golfing and swimming in the river and the ocean.
I like to travel and have traveled to many different places, and am always planning the next trip whether it is close to home or far flung.
I have spent my entire working life in roles of helping and caring and supporting people to reach their full potential, professionally and in volunteerism.
I have worked as a career development practitioner and job developer since 2008; and was successful in achieving my certification in 2011. In a time of transition, I chose this career path and committed myself fully to being the best career development practitioner I could be. I am currently the Wage Subsidy Coordinator, working mostly with employers, and find this pathway in employment services and career development to be fulsome and challenging in a different way, still with a lot of reward. I have been working at North Island Employment for 12 years.
Ashley Slade, BA, B. Ed., Employment Counsellor
Hi, I’m Ashley! I’m a wife, mom, and educator currently holding the role of Specialized Employment Counsellor for Immigrants.
As a kid, I was constantly inspired by my teachers, who took me under their wings and helped me realize my own potential. I wanted to do the same for others. So, I became a teacher. Since getting my teaching license, I have worked in a variety of settings - public and private schools, with children and adults, and even overseas.
Prior to having kids, I was the Principal of a private international school in Vancouver. One of my favorite memories here was designing and implementing a "Happiness" course inspired by Harvard’s curriculum, focused on the science of happiness.
While on maternity leave, I moved my family back to Campbell River, where I started a digital marketing business to work from home. I coached entrepreneurs on growing their brands using digital tools and business systems.
When I saw a position at NIEFS, I knew I had to apply. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work here, where I get to work alongside such passionate people and meet folks from all around the globe who share a sense of resiliency and determination that inspires me each and every day.
Sussana Hill, Receptionist
Let’s introduce you to Sussana, the warm and welcoming face of our organization. She is the first person whom all of those looking for work, going through a change of career or experiencing job loss, see as they come in the door. She greets everyone with a huge smile and a genuine, heartfelt welcome. Sussana is one of those special kind of people who can immediately make everyone feel as if they are the only person in the room.
Sussana has been the face of NIEFS since April 21, 1998. For 26 years, she has greeted and made comfortable thousands of job seekers; and 10 and 20 years later many individuals returning to our building still remember her. Her role is pivotal in the career development field as she ensures that everyone, no matter how low they are feeling or how confused, anxious or afraid of the changes that they are experiencing, feels engaged, supported, and that they have come to the right place. She listens to what they have to say, and answers their questions if she can. If she cannot, she connects them to someone who can.
Sussana is a mother, and a grandmother. Like many others on the NIEFS team, she is a born Vancouver Islander, growing up in Black Creek/Oyster River area and has made the Campbell River and surrounding area her home. She has chosen Quadra Island as her retirement location and when a place came available, she snapped it up. Although she is not retired, she did not want to miss a chance to live out her dream. She has been living on the small island for several years now. She is a musician, a folk singer and entertainer. She enjoys taking in live performances when she can, and she loves being at the beach, cooking her dinner and ocean swimming.

Jen Hamilton, Employment Counsellor
Hi my name is Jen and I am one of the newer staff members at NIEFS. My background was spent working in the Anti-Violence sector, and I am passionate about helping others and working with and for non-profit organizations. When it was time for me to make a career change I was thrilled to come across a job posting for NIEFS.
Although I joined the team only 6 months ago, I can confidently say that my coworkers are some of the best people I’ve ever known. As a team we support folks in navigating their individual career paths while assisting in connecting them to any external resources they may need such as counselling, skills training, financial supports etc. I appreciate the holistic lens through which we approach our work, and I feel so lucky to have landed in an organization that understands the importance of this. The level of care our team shows on a daily basis makes such a large impact on our program participants. I feel privileged to play a small role in all that we do here. I have a passion for Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace, and enjoy connecting with coworkers around how I could be supporting them day to day. A workplace that is supportive and inclusive is important to me; I have found this within our office walls.
In my down time, you can find me spending time with loved ones, reading, lifting weights, walking my dog, practicing TRE (Trauma and Tension releasing exercises), and reading. I’m always reading. I have recently felt a spark of interest ignite around travel, and my family and I are starting to plan some international trips for the years to come. I am grateful to have found a career with amazing work/life balance, and look forward to coming to work every day.

Chelsey Collins, Youth Employment Specialist
I’m Chelsey, a Youth Employment Specialist at Foundry Campbell River. I work with young people ages fifteen to twenty-five, supporting them as they navigate their paths in education and employment.
With more than a decade of experience working with youth through the school district and non-profits, I’m passionate about making young people feel at ease and comfortable, even in situations that can (sometimes) feel a little awkward. I like to bring humor into our conversations, helping to break the ice and help to make those moments easier.
As a mom, small business owner and long-time Campbell River resident, I’m proud to call this community home. I’m grateful every day for the energy and optimism I get from working with the youth in our community.

Karen Bishop, Employment Counsellor
Hello from the North Island
I am Karen and I’m honored and grateful to be able to live, work and play in the unceded Kwakiutl Territory.
As a past resident of the area it’s wonderful to be back. Here on the island I get to enjoy bird watching every day from my yard, beach combing with friends and their fur babies or curling up with my feline friend watching the trees sway on a stormy day. These are my favorite things.
I am employment counsellor in my second year with NIEFS, and came from a background of Occupational Health and Safety management, Health Care and Human Resources.
Working in the field of employment services for a non-profit is extremely rewarding and I look forward to assisting our north communities any way I can.
I invite you to drop in and say hello to our team in the Port Hardy office.

Julie Mills, Specialized Employment Counsellor, Disability Services Team, CCDP
As a CCDP with a background in mental health, I bring unique skills, knowledge and experience to my role as a Specialized Employment Counsellor at North Island Employment Foundations Society.
With a deep appreciation and respect for the challenges service participants might face in their daily lives, I am able to provide a safe space for them to explore career options, gain tools to build employability skills and get the support needed to achieve sustainable work.
As an employment counsellor I am trained to help with disability disclosure, to provide information on employee rights in the workplace and to providing access to specialized assessments that can aid in finding a career or training pathway.
I am entering my third year at NIEFS and the role continues to grow and change daily as we strive to support our clients. Our crew is open and welcoming and we hope you connect with us soon.

Rachel Gildersleeve, Employment Counsellor
Hello! I’m Rachel, an Employment Counsellor at NIEFS in Port Hardy.
This role has been a new career change for me, and it couldn’t have been a better fit.
Prior to me joining the WorkBC family I’ve worked as an Administrator in Municipal Government, Wind Energy and the Oil Industry.
Born and raised on the North Island, I have spent a large part of my life living in the remote community of Port Hardy. I have been involved in various volunteer organizations, church and school events. I’ve always had a deep passion for helping out others and my community and I am proud to call it my home.
I am grateful to work for such a wonderful organization, and the chance to be able to do real helpful work in my community.

Serena Gill, Employer Services Coordinator
Hi! If we haven’t met before, I look forward to meeting you! That’s my jam…meeting people and making connections! I love hearing stories, learning history of our community and finding out how I can help move things forward. I might not remember statistics and numbers, but I will always remember a face, a name, or a voice!
As a born Campbell Riverite, my roots have brought me back home to support the growth of our unique community. I have absolute gratitude for my daily role at NIEFS/WorkBC where I am able to provide a platform for employers to share knowledge and network with each other so we can all contribute to our region’s economic development and community improvements!
Come talk to me about your business idea, the struggles your business might be facing, the knowledge you would like to share with other businesses, or jobs you might be trying to fill!

Dianne Hawkins, Skills Bridge Program Coordinator
With extensive corporate business experience working and advocating on behalf of local businesses, and possessing a background in Adult Education, I find the role as Project Coordinator inspiring and life giving. Creating opportunities for international professionals, connecting clients with professionals in their field, making connections and building collaboration is what I love! It has been encouraging to see the welcome response from the Campbell River and N.I. region business communities in making room for newcomers to the region.
It is an honor and privilege to work with immigrants and help them acquire the necessary credentials they need to secure work in their chosen profession in Canada. To date, NIEFS has helped over 60 clients gain much needed financial assistance to pursue credential recognition etc. Much thanks goes out to the NIEFS board for committing to extending this project beyond the initial funding provided.
I enjoy the role of helping others, providing resources and assisting with navigating challenges. Working with the team at NIEFS and seeing the contributions we make in the lives of others is very rewarding. The Skills Bridge project is a “win-win” for our community, our businesses and the individuals who now call Canada home.

Colleen Wilson, CCDP, Marketing Coordinator
It’s hard to believe that three decades have passed since I first stepped into the world of employment services. The journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Over the years, I’ve worn many hats – youth worker, facilitator, employment counselor, and program manager, to name a few – each role adding a new layer of depth to my experience. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with a remarkable array of talented, passionate, and caring individuals who have not only inspired me but also taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, growth, and community.
My time with NIEFS has been a true game-changer. I have taken on an amazing full-time marketing role, immersing myself in a whole new world of creativity, strategy, and innovation. The challenges have been invigorating, and each day brings an opportunity to learn new skills and grow.
When I’m not at work, you’ll usually find me outside with a camera in hand. As an avid photographer, I’m also known as “The Crowtographer” for my unique close-up shots of crows.
