Position Overview The Pipelayer is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient installation of underground pipe systems and related appurtenances in support of civil and utility construction projects. This role supports water, storm, sanitary, drainage, and related underground work by helping ensure pipe installation is completed to line, grade, specification, and company standards. The Pipelayer works closely with foremen, operators, labourers, survey personnel, and other crew members to prepare trenches, install pipe and fittings, check alignment and elevation, and support safe and productive underground utility work in changing field conditions. Key Roles and Responsibilities Underground Utility Installation • Install underground pipe, fittings, valves, hydrants, manholes, catch basins, chambers, and related utility components as assigned. • Assist with laying pipe to required line, grade, and alignment using plans, grade information, lasers, and field direction. • Prepare pipe bedding, support proper placement, and help ensure pipe joints and connections are completed correctly. • Assist with tie-ins, utility crossings, service connections, thrust restraint preparation, and related underground installation work. Trench Work and Site Coordination • Work safely in and around trenches, excavations, shoring systems, and utility work areas. • Coordinate closely with equipment operators and grade checkers during excavation, pipe placement, backfill, and compaction activities. • Help identify conflicts, obstructions, utility issues, groundwater concerns, and installation challenges and report them promptly. • Support trench readiness, material staging, and efficient movement of pipe and fittings within the work area. Quality, Productivity and Workmanship • Help ensure underground work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, tolerances, and company expectations. • Check pipe placement, joint condition, elevation control, and general workmanship throughout installation. • Identify deficiencies, damaged materials, or rework risks before work progresses. • Contribute to efficient crew productivity by staying organized, prepared, and responsive to field direction. Safety and Housekeeping • Follow safety procedures, excavation safety requirements, utility locates, and site-specific rules. • Use required PPE, tools, and equipment properly and safely. • Participate in hazard assessments, tailboards, and pre-task planning related to underground work. • Maintain clean and orderly work areas and report hazards, trench concerns, damaged materials, and unsafe conditions immediately. Career Path This role may progress to Lead Hand, Foreman, Utility Foreman, Superintendent, or other field leadership positions based on performance, experience, and company needs.
