Hooktender – Newcastle Timber (Sayward, BC) We’re looking for an experienced Hooktender to join our crew in Sayward. If you’ve got a solid background running a rigging side and you’re looking for a steady, Monday–Friday gig on the North Island, we want to hear from you. We take pride in our gear and our crew. This isn't just about moving wood; it’s about doing it right and getting everyone home safe at the end of the shift. At Newcastle, we’re a tight-knit crew. We keep our gear in good shape, and we don’t cut corners on safety. If you’re a local or looking to move to Sayward, we’ve got a steady Monday-to-Friday seat for you. The Payoff: • Union Wages & Benefits: We pay competitive rates that reflect the responsibility of the role. • Full Package: Medical, dental, vision, EFAP, and life insurance. Short-term and long-term disability plans. • Pension: Retirement planning so you’re looked after down the road. • The Gear: We invest in well-maintained equipment so you aren't fighting the machine all day. • The Schedule: 5 days on, weekends off. Get home to your family every night. How to Apply: If you know how to run a side and you’re looking for a long-term home on the Island, let’s talk. Apply with your resume or a summary of your experience on the North Island.
Qualifications & Experience
The Day-to-Day: • You’ll be the "quarterback" of the side. Your main focus is production and safety. You'll be: • Planning and supervising the rigging of high-lead and grapple systems. • Managing the crew (Chokermen/Rigging Slingers) to keep the flow moving. • Handling the heavy lifting—dismantling, moving, and resetting equipment in typical North Island terrain. • Working closely with the Yarder Operator to ensure turns are clean and efficient. What We’re Looking For: • Proven Experience: You’ve spent at least a year (ideally more) as a Hooktender. You know the difference between a good road and a bad one. • Lead by Example: You’re someone the crew respects because you work as hard as they do. • Physical Grit: This is rugged coastal ground. You need to be fit enough to handle the brush and the steel. • Reliability: You’re based in (or moving to) Campbell River or Sayward, BC, and you show up ready to work every morning. • First Aid: Intermediate or Advanced First Aid is an asset.
