Details
Foundry is removing barriers and increasing access to health and wellness services for young people ages 12–24 and their caregivers through a network of youth-friendly centres across British Columbia and online. Drawing on their own knowledge of Indigenous and Kwakwaka’wakw culture, the Cultural Wellness worker helps youth, young adults and their families with culturally safe service navigation and resource information and connects them with Foundry and/or community resources. Key Duties and Responsibilities • Plays a key role in ensuring that the Centre offers a culturally safe, welcoming, inclusive and youth-friendly environment; • Establishes a purposeful relationship with young Indigenous people and supports their engagement and participation in Centre services; • Provides support, guidance and mentorship for Indigenous youth and their families and assists in sharing information on culturally relevant resources and service navigation; • Leads or co-facilitates culturally relevant group services to promote traditional ways of knowing, language and cultural identity with a focus on Kwakwaka’wakw culture and an overall goal to assist youth with skill development and mental health and substance use recovery and relapse prevention; • Coordinates, participates in or assists with planning recreation, social and spiritual activities in collaboration with other Foundry staff, including land-based healing activities; • Provides support to aid with reducing Indigenous youth’s distress, improve or maintain functioning and enable independence and active participation; • Facilitates Indigenous youth engagement and participation in focus groups, workshops, surveys and related activities; This is a permanent part-time position for 28 hours a week based at Foundry Port Hardy.
Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications • Grade 12 plus related experience working with youth and young adults with mental health and/or substance use issues or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; and • Strong knowledge of local Kwakwaka’wakw culture, traditions, ways of knowing and language. • Preference may be given to a person who self identifies as Indigenous from a local Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. Skills and Abilities • Well-developed interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills; • Excellent organization, time and general management skills; • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. • Well-developed cultural competency, including strong knowledge of all local Kwakwaka’wakw Nations and a desire to learn about and support Indigenous youth from other Nations; • Ability to establish rapport and maintain therapeutic relationships with young people and family members; • Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills; As all Foundry Centre’s are considered healthcare facilities and are funded by the Ministry of Health, we are required to comply with all healthcare setting protocols as outlined by the BCCDC and the Medical Health Officer. Staff may be required to mask or be vaccinated should future Public Health Orders change.
