K’awat’si Marine Services (KMS) is seeking a qualified and experienced Master 60/150GT to join our team. The ideal candidate will have the required certifications to command vessels safely and professionally. This position will also require time managing and working on the deck when needed.
KMS supports businesses and communities from Vancouver to Klemtu utilizing water taxis, tugs and barges, a landing craft and an amazing team.
k’awat’si Marine supports businesses that operate in the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations Traditional Territories (between the Smith and Seymour Inlets), including Vancouver Island North, by providing reliable transportation services to and from remote sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Commands tug and barge or landing craft in accordance with all Transport Canada and CSA regulations and requirements.
- Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and support equipment.
- Determines course and speed based on specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and currents.
- Prepares clear and concise pre-departure trip plans and communicates them to the crew and shore-based manager.
- Maintains a clear understanding of, and implements, the company’s safety and environmental policies.
- Issues orders to the crew in a clear and concise manner.
- Ensures safety, environmental, and pollution policies are available to the crew, up to date, and adhered to.
- Report defects or potential defects to the operations manager in a timely manner and request assistance for any issues that may pose a risk to crew health and safety, equipment operation, or pollution controls.
- Works with the operations manager to ensure all required training is up to date.
- Reviews onboard contingency and emergency plans, and reports suggested improvements to the operations manager.
- Report nonconformities, incidents, accidents, and hazardous conditions involving personnel or equipment promptly to the operations manager.
- Operates vessels in accordance with company practices and industry standards.
- Leads the crew and promotes the company’s health and safety program.
- Ensures the effective management of personnel, equipment, and cargo under their charge.
- Participates in and supports the activities of the health, safety, and environmental management system.
- Ensures all logbooks, inspection checklists, and delivery documentation are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.
