K'awat'si Marine Company is looking for a Deckhand to join our team in Port Hardy, B.C.We are seeking a qualified, reliable, and experienced Deckhand to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience with tug and barge and landing craft operations. The deckhand role will be responsible for the general upkeep, maintenance, and safe operation of the vessel. Safety and environmental protection are at the forefront of our operations. This position will be primarily based in Port Hardy, BC.
What K’awat’si Marine Does
Operates a fleet of vessels — including crew boats, landing craft, deck barges, tugs, and water taxis — to serve remote coastal communities and commercial operations in the Smith and Seymour Inlets region and northern Vancouver Island.
Focuses on crucial services like crew transport, feed and fuel delivery, recycling, log‑towing, plus occupational first aid supports

Duties:
- Safely perform work as directed by the captain or senior deckhand.
- Maintain equipment and machinery to ensure they are in a state of readiness; troubleshoot equipment and work in high-noise areas, below deck, or in the engine room.
- Maintain shipboard cleanliness.
- Maintain watch while underway.
- Assist with loading, stowing, securing, and discharging cargo, consumables, fuel, and supplies.
- Secure vessels and barges to floating and shore-based structures.
- Ensure safety, environmental, and pollution control policies are strictly followed.
- Promptly report nonconformities, incidents, accidents, or hazardous conditions involving personnel or equipment to the captain.
- Participate in and support activities related to the health, safety, and environmental management system.
- Ensure all logbooks, inspection checklists, and delivery documentation are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.

Qualifications and Skills:
- Two years of relevant experience preferred
- DVS or equivalent
- ROC-M
- Marine Basic or Advanced First Aid
- Class 5 Driver's License
- Strength and mobility to perform physical work in all types of weather for extended periods
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and be ready for work with short notice
- Mechanical aptitude
- Basic understanding of ship and barge stability
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
- Strong organization and time-management skills
- Forklift Certification (an asset)
- Mobile Crane and Rigging Certification (an asset)
