THE OPPORTUNITY

Western Forest Products have a new opportunity for an Environmental Regulatory Manager in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, B.C.

What You’ll Do: As an Environmental Regulatory Manager with Western Forest Products (WFP), you will be responsible for overseeing and supporting environmental aspects of our Canadian and US manufacturing facilities and supporting our Timberlands and Fibre Supply facilities. Ensuring support is provided so all regulatory compliance is achieved and maintained, evaluating environmental performance within the facilities, and supporting the implementation of the Environmental Management System at the facility level.

Who You Are: You have 5+ years’ experience in roles related to environmental permitting, compliance, and management systems. You have strong knowledge of BC and Canadian environmental legislation. This role requires strong communication skills working with varying levels of stakeholders including external regulators, you’re self sufficient and work well in a fact paced and dynamic environment.

Work Environment: This role is to be performed out of Nanaimo, B.C with regular travel across our manufacturing operations. Candidates located near our Sawmill Operations in Ladysmith, Chemainus or Cowichan Bay, B.C may also be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental Regulatory Compliance

Support environmental permit applications including coordinating field work and site visits, reviewing technical reports and submitting draft and final permits;
Facilitate field data collection programs such as water sampling, dredging, effluent management and air emissions;
Assist facilities in activities to ensure regulatory compliance is achieved and maintained; including environmental permits, document control, regulatory reporting, incident management, training, etc;
Support site visits and inspections conducted by regulators;
Build working relationships with provincial regulators and environmental consultants;
Manage the Environmental Permit database (LRM);
Work with the capital group to establish environmental permitting requirements to support operations and projects/initiatives;
Support tenure renewals process (i.e. foreshores, log handling, etc.) for our Manufacturing, Fibre Supply and Timberlands facilities.
EMS

Supports implementation of and compliance with WFP’s environmental management systems in manufacturing, timberlands and fibre supply operations;
Support internal investigations for environmental incidents i.e., regulatory non-compliances, spills, contaminated sites;
Assist in the maintenance and review of the Environmental Management System (EMS);
Support implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) at the facility level; including site inspections, internal and external audits, and revisions and development of procedures;
Collaborate with Facility Managers in determining and implementing job specific training requirements;
Review and evaluate environmental performance within the facilities, analyze emerging issues and assist in developing and implementing mitigation plans.
Reporting

Compile and submit annual reports (e.g., GHG, ESG, NPRI) and support preparation of the annual sustainability report as needed;
Support preparation of internal reporting requirements such as, weekly and monthly environmental summary reports, and other monthly or quarterly reports as needed.

Qualifications & Experience
Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or Resource Management or equivalent;
5-10 years of relevant experience in environmental permitting, compliance and management systems;
Understanding of BC environmental legislation is a requirement;
Understanding of BC forestry legislation an asset;
Professional designation, such as a professional biologist, agronomist, or forester an asset;
Operational and project management experience in manufacturing would be an asset.
Skills, Knowledge, and Required Competencies

Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written;
Detail focused and strong ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills;
Ability to work with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks;
Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization;
Ability to work remotely and independently while maintaining productivity and effective communication with the Environment Team and operations;
Experience working in the forestry sector is a strong asset, and
Travel to operations is required.
