Details: 
Strathcona Wilderness Institute is looking for an energetic student who has an interest in working with the public in a park environment. The student will coordinate Programs & Volunteers at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre & at the Buttle Lake Information Hut, which are managed by SWI. The position is for a total of 512 hours, over 16 weeks , for 32 hours per week, at $13.00 per hour. The position is dependent on funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program which is announced in early April.

The position is based at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre but may also be home-based & may include travel to Buttle Hut. SWI may be able to assist with transportation arrangements but otherwise the student is expected to arrange her or his own transportation.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Coordinate Programs & Volunteers at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre at Paradise Meadows:
Organize summer programs for visitors to Strathcona Park: international , national, local visitors; from many languages & cultures; youth to seniors; able-bodied to disabled ;
Answer program participants questions about Park trails, plants, wildlife; Inform program participants about Park conservation values, & about safe and appropriate behaviour in the outdoors;
Provide information about SWI & other organizations with an interest in the Park; Provide information & promote SWI nature walks, talks & hike programs and special events;
Liaise with other organizations with an interest in the Park such as Comox Valley Naturalists Society, Comox District Mountaineering Club, BC Parks, Comox Valley Ground Search & Rescue;
Manage loans of SWI resources including wheelchairs.

Organize SWI Volunteers:
Maintain volunteer list; communicate with & schedule volunteers; recruit new volunteers;
Assist with delivery of interpretive programs; Assist with other SWI community presentations & outdoor activities;
Assist with website, social media & marketing for SWI programs.
The students will be assigned special projects in these areas.
Qualifications & Experience:

Ability to work well individually and as a team member, with different mentors • Good communication, problem-solving and organizational skills • Self-motivation, creativity, and ability to work independently and with little supervision • Writing, photography, social media and computer skills will be considered an asset • A valid driver’s license will be considered an asset • A second language will be considered an asset.
This position is aimed at a post-secondary level student who has completed courses in subjects relevant to the areas of work identified. The student must be eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs program i.e. between 15 – 30 years of age, registered as a full-time student , returning to full time studies in the fall, legally entitled to work in Canada.
