Do you want to help look after our ocean resources? Dream of endlessly watching fish on tv? Like to climb trees and dream of climbing the mast of a ship? Archipelago is seeking tech savvy, honest and reliable workers to assist with the delivery of its electronic monitoring programs in Port Hardy, BC. Hours of work can be irregular with weekend and evening work required. All necessary training will be provided.
• Starting wage is $20 - 20.75/hour base wage, plus an additional 8.2% paid out on each pay cheque in leu of paid holidays ($21.75-$22.20/hour equivalent). Minimum 4-hour callout on all days worked.
• Position is subject to an overtime averaging agreement, approved by Labour Canada.

• The hours and work schedule are variable as they are governed by the landing times of the fishing vessels.
• The work is primarily in Port Hardy and surrounding area with occasional work in Port McNeil, Zeballos, and Campbell River, but the ability to travel to other fish landing ports is desirable.
*Fisheries Act and Fisheries (General) Regulations state that a person who owns, operates, manages, or is an employee of an enterprise that catches, cultures, processes or transports fish cannot be certified as a Fisheries Observer.
WHAT KIND OF WORK CAN YOU EXPECT?
You will be trained to work with Electronic Monitoring (EM) equipment to:
• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of EM equipment such as cameras, control systems, GPS receivers, hydraulic pressure sensors and rotation sensors on board commercial fishing vessels.
• Produce and assemble basic parts and equipment.
• Maintain a working knowledge of Archipelago’s EM equipment and practices.
• Assist in maintenance and management of EM inventory and workshop.
• Review sensor data from completed trips to ensure that equipment is working properly and all necessary data is being collected.
• Work with skippers and vessel crew on a regular basis to help them understand and maintain their EM systems.
You will be trained to work in the office with the video and sensor data collected using Electronic Monitoring (EM) to:
• View and interpret video and sensor data collected to monitor commercial fishing activity.
• Identify groundfish species and determine whether they are retained or discarded at sea.
• Record your findings electronically and provide feedback to the appropriate staff.
• Ship, receive, wipe and archive hard drives as needed to maintain hard drive inventory.
• Communicate with coworkers in other offices on a regular basis.
• Greet clients and direct them to the appropriate person.
• Assist with processing vessel registrations.
• Answer and direct incoming phone calls.
• Ensure office is clean and organized.

Qualifications & Experience:
• A great attitude and strong communication skills.
• Self-motivated to learn and grow, and with an ability to prioritize and organize own workload in an effective manner, while working within broad guidelines without direction.
• Computer savvy, comfortable navigating applications on phone, tablet, and computer.
• Interest in learning to work on electronic monitoring equipment systems and a mechanical aptitude with some experience with hand tools and a basic understanding of electrical circuits.
• Ability to work flexible schedules including irregular hours, evenings and weekends.
• Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and meet strict timelines.
• High school graduate.
• Valid BC Driver’s License (or equivalent to) and a reliable vehicle to get yourself to work.
• The job is physically demanding and candidates should be capable of lifting heavy equipment (50+ pounds) and climb ladders up to 25 feet on fishing vessels.
• Bonus points: knowledge of the fishing industry and commercially important species.
