Sasamans Society is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for the position of Indigenous Housing Navigator (IHN). This F/T position is based out of Campbell River, B.C., 5 days (35 hrs) per week. The purpose of the Indigenous Housing Navigator program is to enhance service provision and assist Indigenous peoples (families, couples, individuals, youth, and Elders) in finding suitable, safe, and affordable housing. The IHN will assist those in understanding their tenancy rights & responsibilities when seeking rental accommodations and provide support and advocacy throughout tenancy if necessary. Persons aided by this service may include but is not limited to Indigenous families and individuals involved with the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction (MSDPR) and/or the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD); single parents with children leaving violent relationships; youth aging out of government care and individuals who may be couch surfing, residing in shelters/hotels or on the street. Qualifications & Experience:
Position Competencies:
- Preference will be given to individual with a social work degree or recognized human/social service diploma and demonstrated related working experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, demonstrated planning and organizing abilities and creative problem solving.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and the impact of colonization on Indigenous families and communities.
- Must be familiar with Section 10 of the BC Human Rights Code as it relates to discrimination in tenancies.
- Knowledge and understanding of BC Residential Tenancy Act; Residential Tenancy Branch; BC Income Assistance program and BC Housing & M’akola Housing policies and subsidy programs etc. may be required for optimal service delivery.
- Experience working within homeless and unhoused community an asset.
- Must have ability to develop strong working relationships with urban Indigenous community.
- Experience working with Indigenous families and children at risk is an asset.
- Ability to develop strong collaborative working relationship with community service providers.
- Strong facilitation skills an asset, with the ability to facilitate and lead group processes.
- Ability to work independently is essential, with the ability to develop good working relationship with colleagues.
- Must demonstrate clear professional boundaries and appropriate accountability measures including file/records management.
- Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution.
- Preference will be given to person of Indigenous ancestry.
- Applicant must have own vehicle and a valid driver’s licence.
- Applicant must successfully undergo a Vulnerable Criminal Record Check.
