Family Social Services is hiring a Family Support Worker
The Social Development Department would like to hire a part-time Family Support Worker. Under the supervision of the Director of Family Social Services you will assist families in achieving their risk reduction plan goals through support, referral, skill development, education, mentorship, and cultural continuity.
Role and responsibilities which is included but not limited to:
• Connects families with relevant community resources and encourages the family in following through with those services.
• Coordinate meetings to develop healing plans and set goals with families
• Demonstrates knowledge of Indigenous Cultures and supports traditional teachings and practices appropriate to a family system.
• Makes home visits and shares information with community members to assist them with their risk reduction / healing plan
• Act as a liaison between families and other agencies when necessary (Social Workers, Legal Aide, Probation, Doctors/Specialists, Counsellors, etc) and help families navigate through systems such as court processes, legal aide, housing etc.
• Assists with budgeting strategies, parenting tools, self-advocacy skills and household management skills and housing resources
• Assists with program groups and services as required
• Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and network with other resources to promote holistic health and wellness within the family system and environment.
• Assists with Child Protection Jurisdiction to help create child welfare policies and laws; this may include meetings, seminars, community engagement sessions, etc.

Employment Term: Flexible 20 hours per week.

Qualifications & Experience:
Education and Experience Required:
• Degree or diploma in Child Care, Social Work, Family Support or equivalent
• Awareness of Indigenous cultures and issues affecting First Nations Peoples including dynamics of active and ongoing addiction, sexual abuse, family violence (incl. child abuse & neglect), grief, suicide, depression, healing and wellness
• Knowledge of positive parenting practices.
• Knowledge of the Child and Family Community Service Act, Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators, Bill C-92,
• Demonstrated skills in report writing and documentation.
• Ability to deal with crises and diverse circumstances.
• Must maintain professional standards and maintain confidentiality with respect to their families and work.
• Must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal record check
• As this is outreach work candidate must have reliable transportation and hold valid BC class 5 driver’s license
• Standard First Aid certification (preferable)
