THE OPPORTUNITY
What You’ll Do: Western Forest Products is seeking 2 Management Trainees within Timberlands to join our Quatsino Sound and Englewood Forest Operations. As the Management Trainee, you will team up with senior staff, who will provide training, mentoring and hands-on experience to prepare you to eventually assume a supervisory role where needed in the Timber Supply Business Group.
Training areas will include all aspects of Western’s safety and environmental systems, detailed understanding of various harvest systems and process techniques, labor relations and collective agreements, setting employee performance expectations, coaching skills, interacting with contractors, fundamental financial concepts, and reports.
Who You Are: Our ideal candidate brings a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a related technical diploma, and has previous co-op or work experience in the forest products industry. You have a general knowledge of the Timberlands processes, strong analytical skills and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
Work Environment: The positions are to be performed in person at our Quatsino Sound Forest operations in Holberg, BC or at our Englewood Forest operations in Woss, BC.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the General Foreman, training and areas of learning will include:
-Providing leadership in safety and environmental stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence to company safety and sustainability processes and procedures.
-Assisting with supervision across all phases of Company harvesting operations (Roadbuilding, Yarding, Loading, Hauling, and Dryland Sort), building quality requirements into each phase;
-Creating and sustain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement;
-Assisting with the management of the USW relationship and other key relationships and contractual obligations;
-Working with Contractor and Company personnel to effect positive change with respect to operational safety, quality and productivity;
-Assisting with coaching and managing the performance of hourly staff and contractors;
-Overseeing inventories, ensuring optimal levels are maintained;
-Supporting the establishment and ongoing improvement of production phase metrics;
-As a representative of the Company, carry out the job duties with the utmost professionalism and integrity; and
-Other duties as required and assigned
Qualifications & Experience:
Education and Experience
-Preference given to candidates with post-secondary education in Forestry (technical diploma or degree)
-Business education is an advantage
-Co-Op experience or summer term work in the forest products industry or 1-3 years full time experience required
