Details:
The role of Automation Coordinator (AC) for the next Federal Election is an office job, we do not currently deploy technology at the polls, nor for door-to-door enumeration – the AC does not need to travel.
The role involves assisting the IBM contractor in the set-up of the Returning Office server and switch, DSL and wireless connections, workstations and network, and firewall.
After the install, the AC then becomes the network administrator creating user roles and privileges, and
Conducts the daily back-up,
Provides daily in office computer and printer support,
And provides phone support for staff at 3 remote offices.
In addition, there is a significant daily role in using the 'Revise' application to review and accept changes to electors, generate elector lists for political parties (multiple times), create polling division splits and mergers, and enter and validate election night results into the Elections Canada live results reporting system.
The role requires security clearance checks.
We do not know when the next election will occur - a minority government can fall at any time.
Historically minority governments have lasted for 1.5 years – which would take us to April of 2021. The office hours are 9-5 weekdays and by phone availability on weekends during the event, and usually 10 days after the event to validate results, and close down and purge the systems.
The event must be a minimum of 36 days.
The 2019 election was 50 days (plus 10 days after the event).
For a 36 day event the AC is paid a flat $8,919 fee, and prorated for a longer event.
The AC is paid $28.96 per hour for training prior to the event.
The training will be conducted on-line.
