The BC Coroners Service (BCCS) is responsible for determining the circumstances of all sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths in the province. The BCCS is seeking mature, compassionate and community minded individuals to work as Community Coroners on an “as and when required” basis. These unique positions offer an opportunity for individuals to use various skills in serving their communities in a high-profile role.
In this role you will conduct a preliminary scene investigation into all unnatural, sudden and unexpected deaths in the designated area you serve. Community Coroners are an integral part of the investigative team, providing critical initial information that allows for timely, thorough and accurate investigations.
Qualifications & Experience:
Qualifications for this role include:
• An undergraduate degree or diploma in Health, Legal or Social Science disciplines, and
• A minimum 5 years of professional and practical employment experience in gathering, interpreting and synthesizing investigative information in a medical, health care, or legal/medico-legal setting, and using that information for timely decision making, effective risk management and audience- appropriate communication
• OR; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
• Experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, partners, allies, and/or agencies.
• Experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting investigative information from diverse sources.
• Experience with and a demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology, or willingness to successfully complete a medical terminology course within 6 months of employment.
• Experience communicating with individuals with sensitivity during highly emotional situations.
