North Island Community Services is a not-for-profit society that has successfully been providing community-based services to the Mount Waddington region for 40 years. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and a strong community connection to support and build the successful launch of Strong Start in Alert Bay.
Funded by Vancouver Island School District (SD) 85, the Strong Start Program is a parent participation-based program for children aged 0-5. The program offers play-based early learning activities – including stories, music and art, focused on preparing children for Kindergarten.
The program is designed for early learning development, including language, physical, social, emotional and cognitive. It is an opportunity for children to learn through play, while making new friends with other children of a similar age.
The successful candidate will offer a weekly drop-in session, at no cost to parents, at the Alert Bay Elementary School. At times the Strong Start Coordinator will be required to attend School District professional development, training and meetings. This program coincides with the SD calendar and does not run on Professional Development days or during the summer months.
The position would start on November 14th and would be for 3.5 hours/week. There may be an opportunity for an additional day, working another 3.5 hours, between September and June.

Qualifications & Experience:
The Ideal Candidate will:
-Excel at developing trust-based and supportive community relationships
-Enjoy working in an educational setting with children aged 0-5, as well as their families/caregivers
-Be experienced in program planning, workshop development, and early childhood education
-Foster all aspects of a child’s development including social, emotional, physical and cognitive development
-Demonstrate warmth, enthusiasm and approachability
-Prove to be an effective communicator (oral, written and listening) with a strong awareness of cross-cultural practices, traditions and values
Essential Qualifications:
-Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certification
-Approved Ministry of Justice Criminal Records Check
-Level 1 First Aid w/CPR (or willing to obtain prior to start date)
-Food Safe Certificate Preferred (willing to obtain upon hire)
