Details:
We are seeking a Seasonal Caretaker Couple to look after Twin Islands, which are privately-owned islands in Desolation Sound, British Columbia.
The work months run from the beginning of November until the end of March, although date flexibility may be required (start and finish dates).
The islands are accessible by boat and by float plane.
It is a requirement that the Couple have their BC Boaters' License and have experience operating marine vessels in variable ocean conditions.
Ideally, applicants will be local and familiar with the area.
The position is live-in during the work months.
There is a lodge, caretaker’s cabin, guest/staff cabin, and barn and workshops on South Twin.
There is a network of roads on South Twin leading to the garden, barn and bays, but fewer roads on the North Island.
Primary Responsibilities:
-Basic reporting and weekly check ins with the office.
-Basic equipment maintenance and upkeep -- generators, boat engines, golf carts, tractors and occasionally heavy equipment if qualified.
-Construction (optional depending on skills and interest).
-Monitoring of off-grid systems that include electrical, solar, hydro, and batteries.
-Carpentry (optional depending on skills and interest).
-Grounds care and upkeep. Keep roads clear and free of debris.
-Cleaning and Maintenance of building exteriors.
-Cutting of firewood and kindling as wood heat is used in winter.
-Regular trips to mainland or neighbouring islands for provisions.
-Monitoring of water systems.
-Keep all equipment, storage sheds and parts organized.
-Provide security and surveillance of island activity.
-Care & feeding of animals -- cats & chickens.
-Other duties that may be required from time to time.
Qualifications & Experience:
Qualifications:
-The Caretaker Couple should have a genuine desire to work together and an ability to demonstrate having done so successfully in previous positions.
-Ability to monitor off-grid equipment including power, septic, fuel and electrical systems.
-Experience operating 18-26' power boats in a range of ocean conditions.
-Basic knowledge of technology including computers, cell phones, Wifi, Internet research, record keeping.
-Ability to perform physical work in an outdoor environment with experience in equipment, mechanical systems, landscaping and garden management.
-Ability to lift 30 to 50 pounds.
Must have valid Drivers’ License with a clean driver’s abstract. Must be insurable.
Must have valid BC Boaters’ License.
Must currently hold status to legally work in Canada.
Be prepared to sign a confidentiality agreement.
