We are looking for a hardworking and motivated temporary Laboratory and Field Technician interested in gaining laboratory and field work experience at BC’s top independent aquatic health provider.
BC CAHS has a highly motivated and dedicated team in place and is looking for the right person who will further develop and grow our services.
Job Summary:
The Laboratory and Field Technician will be responsible for assisting with diagnostic services and
research projects at BC CAHS. This position is temporary – May 2019 – August 2019 with a possible
extension to December 2019.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Support laboratory activities related to phlebotomy, PCR based, water filtration, and histology
assays;
Activities include: Labeling, reagent and solution preparation, sample receiving and processing,
clean-up, and data entry;
Prepare samples and assist with the DNA and RNA extractions;
Assist with other diagnostic assays as needed (e.g. Bioassay);
Assist researchers on specific projects;
Assist with routine activities, and general laboratory and equipment cleaning and maintenance;
Prepare for and participate in field work;
Care and identification of invertebrates;
Participate in BC CAHS outreach activities;
Other duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
A minimum of two years post-secondary education including:
o At least one (8 month) year of post-secondary education in microbiology, biochemical,
biological or fisheries sciences. Minimum requirement of a lab course in molecular
genetics (Principles of Genetics).
o Courses covering chemistry, molecular biology, principles of immunology, microscopy,
fish or invertebrate biology would be an asset.
Skills:
Knowledge of safety practices in a laboratory (WHMIS).
Knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques.
Previous biology work experience would be an asset.
Previous microscopy and molecular lab experience would be an asset.
Well organized and keen attention to detail, efficiency in communication and in keeping laboratory
notes.
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Access to a vehicle for field work
Ability to work well with others in a fast paced environment.
Initiative, confidence, and good team work spirit.
Ability with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Outlook) and internet resources.
