About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time Prep Cook based on Quadra Island, BC.

Reporting to the Head Cook, the Prep Cook, you will play a key role in providing high-quality, nutritious meals for our clients, staff, and visitors, ensuring the food service aligns with both health and safety standards and the holistic healing goals of our Centre. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to creating meals that nourish and support our clients in their recovery journeys.

More specifically, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Washing and putting away dishes and cooking utensils, cleaning counters, floors, and other surfaces, and removing trash and other waste materials and keeping the kitchen and equipment sanitized according to residential regulations.
• Assisting with cutting, chopping, slicing, and dicing ingredients for use in cooking. Prepare vegetables, fruits, meats, and other ingredients for various dishes in the planned, approved daily menus.
• Helping with basic cooking tasks such as boiling, grilling, sautéing, or baking under the direction of Head Cook and cooks.
• Organizing and storing food items appropriately in refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage. Ensure proper labeling and rotation of ingredients to minimize waste.
• Ensuring safe and responsible use of the tools and equipment needed to perform work, ensuring the safety of themselves, co-workers, clients, and visitors as per activities stated in the OHS manual.
• Assisting with cafeteria food service and cleanup of dining area.
• Observing issues related to kitchen equipment and infrastructure and communicating the same with the Head Cook.
• Awareness of compliance with health and safety regulations related to the safe handling of food
• All other duties as assigned or required.

All employees working for the We Wai Kai Nation and Tsakwa'lutan Healing Centre are required to work collaboratively and supportively to achieve the overall goals of the Nation. As such, employees are expected to work outside of their own jobs and job descriptions from time to time to achieve the goals of the organization. Job duties and work schedules may be changed from time to time to achieve these goals.

Qualifications & Experience
About You

To qualify, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
• Grade 12 graduation and related post-secondary training
• Previous experience in food preparation or a similar role (preferred but not mandatory)
• Certification in Food Safe Level 1 (or willingness to obtain)
• A willingness to learn and integrate Indigenous culinary traditions
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a recovery-focused environment
• Basic computer skills, including working knowledge of the MS Office suite
• Organizational and time management skills with attention to details and accuracy
• Flexible work practices – to work independently and to cooperate as a team member
• Ability and willingness to create a workplace culture valuing the health and safety of employees and clients
• Adherence to the workplace rules and policies of the Healing Centre and the Nation, the established procedures related to this position, and to generally accepted work practices related to respectful and cooperative team performance
• Clean criminal record, including a vulnerable sectors check

As a Prep Cook, you are dependable, adaptable, and committed to supporting meals that nurture both body and spirit. Your respect for cultural values and teamwork supports the holistic healing journey of each client. This position requires continuous physical activities related to the operation of a commercial kitchen. This is a part-time job (35 hours per week), often requiring additional work hours including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. The workplace is often busy, resulting in regular interruptions and related stresses.
