THE OPPORTUNITY

What You’ll Do: In this rewarding role, you will utilize the latest technologies, including LiDAR, to maintain and advance industry leading forest inventory data for 1.6 million hectares of land that Western sustainably manages. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with First Nations, government, and subject matter experts to support the development of landscape level planning initiatives including Forest Landscape Plans and Integrated Resource Management Plans and the associated Timber Supply Analysis. Working as part of the Inventory and Analysis team, the ideal candidate will be highly adept at managing and analyzing large data sets and will have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Who You Are: Our ideal candidate has a post-secondary degree in forestry and registration or eligible for registration as a professional forester in British Columbia. 5 plus year of experience in roles of progressively increasing responsibility considered an asset.

Work Environment: This role can be performed either remotely or in Campbell River in a hybrid work environment. Expectations for the time being are that this role will be working from home or the office with proper safety plans in place.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Work with industry experts to evaluate, test and develop leading-edge forest inventories including a LiDAR derived area-based forest inventory.
-Maintain and update Western’s existing area-based forest inventory annually to reflect harvesting, growth, natural disturbance and planting activities.
-Utilize LiDAR and sample data to develop, maintain and enhance Western’s individual tree inventory.
-Design the acquisition of new inventory data.
-Work with First Nations partners to develop and enhance forest inventories in their traditional territories.
-Provide strategic analysis to determine the quality, characteristics and prevalence of critical forest attributes both today and in the future.
-Work closely with other Inventory and Analysis members to prepare data and provide technical analysis support for Forest Landscape Plans, Integrated Resource Management Plans and Timber Supply Analyses.
-Conduct timber valuations for private managed land.
-Manage and maintain stem level information from cruise plots in a centralized database.
-Prepare, tender, manage and oversee contracts related to forest inventory data collection and development.
-Develop presentations and written reports.
-Present to public advisory groups, other public forums and to key stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience: 
Education and Experience

-Post-secondary degree in Forestry.
-Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Forester in British Columbia.
-5+ years of experience in roles of progressively increasing responsibility.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

-Excellent data analysis skills with a good understanding of statistics.
-Excellent data management skills, including experience maintaining and querying datasets in SQL Server, Python, R or MS Access.
-Experience with forest management and growth and yield software (TIPSY, VDYP, Trimble Land Resources Manager).
-Extensive knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
-Experience working in ESRI software suite.
-Experience with timber supply modelling software such as Patchworks or Woodstock is a strong asset.
-Ability to communicate complex material to varied audiences in both oral and written form.
-Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
-Ability to work as part of a team and independently as required
