This 35hr. per week position provides individual or group counselling for women who have experienced sexual assault, violence/abuse in their relationships, or childhood abuse. The Women’s Counsellor assists women in identifying, understanding, and overcoming the effects of violence in their lives. The position works closely with the Women’s Safe Shelter program.
Duties include providing counselling and emotional support to women, developing and delivering public awareness/information sessions and educational support materials; maintaining positive relationships with other service providers and agency team. It is critical that this person be able to demonstrate ethical thinking, respecting the diversity of our North Island community.
Qualifications & Experience:
A degree, preferably a Master’s, in Counselling or related field, or an appropriate combination of education and training. Should have sound knowledge and understanding in the area of violence against women and children. Preferred background should include direct counselling experience with women who have experienced abuse. Other assets would be analysis, knowledge and training in trauma counselling; knowledge of First Nations culture; experience working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
