The District ecosystems program is responsible for the protection, conservation and restoration of the biological diversity native to the region, including within the Great Bear Rainforest, and for the integration of fish and wildlife habitat and ecosystem conservation standards and guidelines into forest, mineral, land and water uses, as well as industrial and community development to minimize the impacts of human activity.
As part of the District Stewardship Team, the Ecosystems Biologist is the local expert with a strong knowledge of the legislation and policy that governs the actions of the Ministry, including the Forest Act, Water Sustainability Act, Land Act and Forest and Range Practices Act. The position is responsible for identifying, developing, analyzing and implementing ecosystem (terrestrial and aquatic) conservation, restoration and enhancement projects. You provide recommendations on the regional ecological and regulatory monitoring requirements and implement them through compliance and effectiveness monitoring programs. Highly organized and detail oriented, you contribute to the development of best management practice initiatives, adapting provincially based guidelines and standards to regional settings. Qualifications & Experience:
Qualifications for this role include:
• Degree in biological sciences, natural resource conservation and management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity and 3 years of recent (within the past 5 years) related experience or equivalent; OR
• Master’s in Science in biological sciences, natural resource conservation and management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity and 2 years of recent (within the past 5 years) related experience.
• Registered (or immediately eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology.
