Details:
-Standing Together - Tribal Journeys 2017, hosted by the We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum First Nations and organized by Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, is seeking 3 candidates to fill supporting roles for the event.
-Students will work on Public Education and Interpretation, Coordinating and Planning initiatives, and other activities to support the biggest First Nations gathering on the West Coast.
-Tribal Journeys is an annual event that has been ongoing for over 30 years as a way of revitalizing the dugout canoe traditions.
-For First Nations communities the opportunity to host Tribal Journeys is important to the cultural traditions and a source of great pride.
-Linking our youth to this positive opportunity while providing a forum for healing and reconciliation for all participants, is at the heart of Tribal Journeys.
-It serves to strengthen the communities and ensure that the cultural traditions thrive under a new generation of leaders eager to reconnect the threads of the past to the tapestry of modern life.
-Spectators too, are often moved by the inclusive nature of the event, which welcomes them to feast and witness the stories and dances of each canoe family
-While in the traditional territories of the We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum First Nations, canoe pullers and support crews will be provided with land to camp on and meals each day.
-This translates to nearly 70,000 meals being provided and is reflective of the scale of the event.
-We will host community feasts on Quadra Island August 5th and in Campbell River August 7th, which are open to the public.
Qualifications & Experience:
-Candidates should meet either Young Canada Works or Canada Summer Jobs criteria, and indicate this in their cover letter.
-Experience with large events in any form is an asset, although not mandatory.
-Positions are dependent on successful funding applications.
