Health Promotion Educator - Youth Outreach Program
The Health Promotion Educator (Youth Outreach Program) provides and coordinates community-based education and support for high-risk youth regarding HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, safer sex and substance use, homophobia/heterosexism and sexual decision-making to a variety of audiences in the North Island Health Region as a means of increasing youth-at-risk awareness of HIV, HCV, STIs and peer/ community support, and reducing the further incidence of HIV and related blood-borne illnesses among high-risk youth.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Participates in the design and delivery of youth peer helper training on a variety of topics: HIV/AIDS, HCV, STIs, prevention, testing and treatment, safer sex and substance use, and peer support, to high-risk and other youth participants of the Youth at Risk project 2. Assists with the facilitation of presentations and workshops providing HIV/AIDS prevention education information, harm reduction and sexual decision making to general and alternate school and community-based audiences 3. In consultation with the manager, orders and/or creates, collates and distributes educational materials and safer sex packs to youth-at-risk and youth partner agencies 4. Provides outreach, education and healthcare/social service navigation support to high-risk youth in Courtney region, as well as outreach support to youth-at-risk in the region, and surrounding area 5. Communicates with community-based organizations, regarding issues related to HIV, HCV, STIs, safer sex and substance use for youth 6. Assists in the coordination of the “Love Shack” youth peer event outreach program and youth team: this includes volunteer recruitment, training and mentorship; coordination and booking of event outreach; order and coordinate food, tents, audio visual equipment on the day of the event, etc. 7. Participates in the evaluation and reporting of program activities as needed. 8. Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience:
• University degree in health or social sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with youth-at-risk • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
Skills and Abilities:
• Strong public speaking and group facilitation skills • Excellent understanding of youth health, HIV/AIDS, STDS and Hepatitis (transmission, prevention, treatment, psycho-social issues, etc.), safer sex and substance use strategies, homophobia/heterosexism/transphobia, population health and health promotion strategies • Excellent communication, time management and organizational skills • Strong community development and program management skills • Experience working with volunteers • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients • Good computer skills, including use of databases and word-processing software • Knowledge and experience working with a diverse clientele facing significant structural vulnerability is an asset • Conflict resolution skills • Ability to analyze and resolve problems • Access to own vehicle is an asset
